User Tips
Ask Here PA Basics
- Ask Here PA is staffed by real people, available 24 hours a day,
7 days a
week.
- Allow enough time to get the best answer. We may ask YOU questions so we can
provide the best information.
- You will get an automated message when first connecting to the service.
- There may be a time lag before the librarian comes on and while chatting,
depending on connection speed and how busy the service is.
- Too slow? If you're already in a chat session with a librarian
but the system is too slow you can give us all your question details,
deadline and email address & then disconnect. We will email you an answer.
OR if a librarian doesn't come online soon enough please disconnect and send
your question using the Ask a Librarian
email service.
Minimum Requirements
- 28K or better Internet connection. It could take 15 seconds for a response
depending on your setup.
- Microsoft Internet Explorer browser is preferred. You may also use Netscape 6.01
or below.
- Enable "session cookies" in your browser.
- Window XP Service Pack 2: please follow these
instructions so the Ask Here PA 24/7 reference service will work.
Don't Disconnect Accidentally
- Do not use your browser toolbar to navigate or change the address bar or you
will disconnect from your session.
- During your session only browse within the Ask Here PA frame.
It Just Won't Work!
- Mozilla, AOL browsers and WebTV are not supported.
- MAC users - we can send you web pages but not actually escort you through them.
- Firewalls - these may have to be disabled. If you experience a problem, exit the
service and check our firewall instructions on how to configure your firewall to
allow communication with the librarian.
When All Else Fails
- Don't bookmark or print during the session. You will receive all session
information in a transcript after you exit if you provided a email address.
- If you must open a second browser window during the session use the "Start" menu
or "taskbar" shortcut. DO NOT use Ctrl "N" or File "new" or your session will
crash.
